Positive Behavioural Support (PBS)

How you behave tells other people if there is something wrong.

You might behave in certain ways to get your needs met. This might impact on you, and or others around you.

How you behave might get called “behaviour which challenges”.

Services use something called Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) to help you get your needs met.

The video below helps explain what PBS is.

Positive Behavioural Support

ositive Behavioural Support aims to give you a good life.

If you have a good life, you will be supported in the right way to meet your needs.

Sometimes things are called PBS but are not actually PBS as it should be. This can make it confusing.

BILD and PBS Alliance have made a useful guide to help you know what to expect from good PBS. The guide will also help you and anyone supporting you recognise when PBS is not being done properly.

Communication means talking, writing, using sign language, pointing, smiling and frowning, and lots more.

You need other people to understand your communication. Then they can help you get what you need.

Lots of people find it helpful to have a Communication Passport. This can have information about how best to work with you.

PBS Community of Practice

As PBS is growing in its use, there are a number of groups that are being set up throughout the UK.

These are called Communities of Practice.

Each group has their own aims. However, they all work to be a supportive place for everyone involved in PBS.

Individuals, carers, families, and professionals can access these groups.

You can find out more and see if your local area has a Community of Practice using the link below:
