To mark learning disability week 2022 we wanted to highlight the fantastic contribution of the expert by experience consultation group to the Making Positive Moves initiative.
As part of the Making Positive Moves project, a consultation group was set up to involve experts by experience. Sam Prowse, is the chair of the group and wanted to share the great work the group does!
The consultation group is a small group that includes people with learning disabilities, all of whom have different backgrounds. Some of the members of the group have experienced for themselves moving from hospitals to the community. Members of the research team also join some of the groups.
Due to COVID-19 the group now meets online but meetings are still kept monthly and are arranged to take place a week before the steering group meetings. This helps information sharing.
Members of the group provide invaluable feedback and perspectives from their own lived experiences. This has meant that the consultation group have been able to contribute ideas and views to the researchers and steering group. Specifically, about how the project is working and the use of certain tools within the project to ensure information shared is accessible for everyone. Additionally, crucial topics such as equality and diversity have also been able to be explored within the group.
It is easy to see everyone’s passion to helping to make services better for people with learning disabilities during each meeting. Moving forward from COVID-19 and as life begins to get back to usual for some people, this has meant some of our members have left the group due to other commitments.
Making Positive Moves would like to thank those who have recently left the group, as well as current members, for all of their hardwork, ideas and enthusiasm throughout the project.
