Why Looking After Myself?
Focusing on wellbeing and when things can go wrong seems inevitable for a clinical psychologist! I spend time working with people to think about how they are doing psychologically, and working with them, and those around them, to make things a bit better.
But the importance of looking after yourself mostly came from talking to people who had moved as part of Transforming Care. People talked about a huge range of emotions that they felt while they were waiting to move. People also talked a lot about how frustrating it was waiting. There is a lot of uncertainty inherent in the moving process, and this can be so hard to deal with. Not only for the person moving, but often for family members too. As a psychologist, I know that there are some things that can help, like using relaxation techniques.
What will I find here?
As suggested above, one of the main focuses of this section is helping people moving to understand that it is totally normal to have lots of different emotions about moving. There is no one way to feel, and there is no right way to feel. Whatever emotional experience someone has is valid. There is advice here both for people how are moving, and those supporting them.
Linked to emotional responses, you will also find here links to activities, videos and resources about relaxation, breathing exercises and grounding exercises.
As mentioned about, the uncertainty of moving can take its toll on family members, who can understandably be stressed, worried and annoyed with the process. The Looking After Myself section of the website therefore also has information and advice for carers in looking after their own needs. We cannot stress enough how important this is! Carers do such a brilliant but challenging job, and need to make sure they are getting supported as much as possible.
The final aspect to the Looking After Myself section concentrates on physical health. This cannot be separated from overall wellbeing, and is a vital part of staying well and healthy. It might be that people have moved from somewhere with more support, and are now responsible for more aspects of keeping themselves healthy than before. Hopefully they will find useful information here to help manage Annual Health Checks, understand medication, and where to go for more help if needed.
